Bypass transition in a boundary layer flow induced by plasma actuators

چکیده
Bypass transition in flow over a flat plate triggered by pair of dielectric-barrier-discharge plasma actuators mounted on the surface and aligned streamwise direction is investigated. A four-species plasma–fluid model used to electrohydrodynamic force generated actuation. counter-rotating vortices created downstream actuators, leading formation high-speed streak centre two low-speed streaks each side. As length increases, more momentum added boundary layer eventually turbulent wedge at an almost fixed location. With large spanwise distance between (wide layout), direct numerical simulations indicate that both sides lose secondary stability via inclined varicose-like mode simultaneously, leaving symmetric perturbation pattern with respect actuators. Further downstream, perturbations are tilted mean shear high- consequently ‘W’-shaped observed. When placed closer (narrow layout) direction, becomes stronger instability first occurs asymmetric pattern. Inclined sinuous-like instabilities coexist following breakdown negative side remain centre. Here tilting disturbances dominated display ‘V’ shape. Linear analysis techniques, including biglobal transient growth, performed further examine fluid physics; aforementioned phenomena narrow wide layouts, such as instabilities, ‘W’ shapes, breakdown, all

Turbulent boundary-layer control with plasma actuators.
This paper reviews turbulent boundary-layer control strategies for skin-friction reduction of aerodynamic bodies. The focus is placed on the drag-reduction mechanisms by two flow control techniques-spanwise oscillation and spanwise travelling wave, which were demonstrated to give up to 45 per cent skin-friction reductions. We show that these techniques can be implemented by dielectric-barrier d...

Experimental findings show that transition from laminar to turbulent flow may occur also if the exponentially growing perturbations, eigensolutions to the linearised disturbance equations, are damped. An alternative non-modal growth mechanism has been recently identified, also based on the linear approximation. This consists of the transient growth of streamwise elongated disturbances, with reg...
